A gland called the pancreas is situated in the abdomen, between the spine and the stomach. It creates hormones that control blood sugar levels as well as digestive enzymes. Organs like the pancreas are made of cells. As the body needs more cells, cells often divide to create new ones. When cells get older, they die and are replaced by young cells. This procedure occasionally goes wrong. New cells form when the body does not need them or when the old cells do not degenerate. A tumour can develop when the excess cells join to form a mass of tissue. Some tumours are not dangerous. This indicates that while they are aberrant, they cannot spread to other bodily parts. Cancer is a term for a cancerous tumour.
